Did they like pizza? "I hope so; it was $20,000," he replied. Builder David Rowe's client loved to cook and spent years planning his dream kitchen. "We put seven faucets in the kitchen," Rowe said. Kitchens are the center of home activity, according to builders and remodelers. The most requested remodeling projects are kitchens and bath, and such projects have the highest return when a house is sold, netting 50 percent to 75 percent of the investment, according to Consumer Reports magazine.

Kitchen garden

If the Isle of Anglesey, where I live, has particular merit for a gardener, it is that we are warmed by the Gulf Stream, giving us mild weather conducive to growing early vegetables. The drawback, however, is that the winds off the Irish Sea are usually considerable. In the back end of 2006 and for most of January, the weather has been pretty extreme. Only in the past few days have I been able to get on to the soil and do a little digging: until now, gale-force winds combined with incessant rain have been a major problem. In the night, the sound of breaking glass and flapping polythene torn from one of my polytunnels has woken me with a jolt. What I love even more is the efforts of so many in Madison to celebrate this city's devine love of food. Tonight commences the first annual Restaurant Week right here in Madison, Wisconsin. The event will be lasting all week, Sunday January 28 through Friday, February 2! For the next six days, an array of restaurants in Madison and the surrounding areas will be offering specialized menus to all of its customers. For only $25 per person restaurants will have three delightfully delicious three course meals for customers to choose from. An appetizer, entree and dazzling dessert from some of Madison's most prestigious restaurants! The details of these menus can be found at Madison Magazine. (I highly suggest that reservations be made!) The first annual event is sponsored by Madison Magazine, Sysco, and Madison Originals and is sure to be a great success, that will hopefully develop a strong tradition.

Blitz Silver Shine - Silver Jewelry Cleaner

Blitz Silver Shine - Silver Jewelry Cleaner is a revolutionary new product for cleaning silver, silver bracelets, earings, necklaces, rings, and almost any other silver product you can think of! He has suggested his troubled department be divided into separate justice and security ministries. Downing Street says it is a serious plan, while government sources say it could be completed within months. But Jonathan Baume of civil servants' union the First Division Association, warned against rushed changes. He said staff morale had been affected by the recent headlines and people were being pushed and pulled from one priority to the next. Meeting local legend Eddie Matney at Stoudemire's Downtown, Anna seemed a little star-struck at first. Ian began the day by doing some laundry in a bucket, a source of bemusement for the singer. "I can't believe I'm washing my clothes in a bucket," he remarked. "Everybody's done that," replied Shilpa, as Jermaine provided some advice on how to go about it. However, it wasn't Ian's dirty clothes that were on Jermaine's mind. "The shower smells, the floor is dirty," the cleanliness-obsessed Jackson complained. Washing up was another point of contention, as Jermaine couldn't understand why people couldn't do their own. "When they start snacking, they should think, somebody's gotta clean this up," he said. Thats back when Jamie Olivers Fifteen restaurant on Collins Street in Melbourne wasnt even a pipe dream. But today, Puttock says knife injuries are by far the most common accident he sees as the head of Fifteens kitchen. He will be sharing stories about these and other safety challenges at the opening breakfast of the 10th Annual Safety In Action Conference on March 20 in Melbourne. The idea behind the Fifteen program is to inspire and train disadvantaged youths and to encourage them to build careers in the restaurant industry. The trainees learn all about knife and kitchen safety as well as other occupational hazards at Box Hill TAFE. But, Puttock says it is still something he needs to drill into them while they are undergoing their first year of experience in the restaurant.Basic things like hygiene and how not to cut yourself, things that seem like common knowledge to us, are not so basic to a teenager who eats a lot of fast food and hasnt really spent much time in a kitchen, he says.

Divine Design : Kitchen redo connects rooms, brings in light

Lorraine and Kurt have experienced a lot of firsts lately, including buying their first house and having their first baby. They’ve been absorbed in the joys of parenthood, and Lorraine has even started a weekly playgroup in their new digs for neighborhood moms and tots. The problem was the kitchen, in which the get-togethers were held — a dark, dated room that had yet to be renovated. While big on space, the kitchen was definitely small on style and functionality. So I gathered up my crew and got set to design a fabulous country-style kitchen with big city amenities, and make it a practical space for Kurt, Lorraine and all manner of mamas and babes.I decided to gut the entire kitchen, so everything was removed — cabinetry, furniture, countertops and floors. Then, spying my trusty sledgehammer, I decided to knock down a few walls to properly "connect" the kitchen to the rest of the house.

Kitchen confessions

From nearly the first moment Scott the Brother began medical school, he came home to Peggy Jane the Mom's kitchen in an uproar.Overnight, it seemed, he turned into a 6-foot-5, enormous kid determined to never again eat red meat or fat. This is the guy who drinks a 12-ounce diet soda in one swig. My mother had a red and white kitchen, so there's a sentimental attachment there. My friend says it's retro, that I will have to do a '40s look to go with the color scheme. Is that true? We have a Victorian house with high ceilings in the kitchen and white cabinets. A 1940s look won't fit. A: Relax about the retro business. Red and white can be just right for any style of kitchen, from rustic country to pure, cool contemporary. It's all about how you use it. In the photo we show here, the dynamic duo becomes a trio with true brio, teaming with black to jazz-up an old-fashioned kitchen without overpowering its vintage charms. Smartened up by the gleaming-red enameled range and lively checkered floor, this is a kitchen for any era, with energy to spare and decorating tips to share, such as the easy mix of wood tones and painted cabinets; the sassy swags hung over efficient striped shades; the small island that doubles for work-on and eat-on space.

Hottest Design Trends Emerge From Sub-Zero and Wolf's Kitchen ...

MADISON, Wis., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the past 14 years, Sub-Zero and Wolf's Kitchen Design Contest has evolved into one of the most coveted "wins" in the kitchen design industry. The 603rd Support Battalion is one of four Army units worldwide competing for the honor of Best Field Kitchen with the Philip A. Connelly Award. On Wednesday, Army judges watched how soldiers set up a portable dining hall, cook, serve the meals to soldiers in the field, and most importantly, they checked to see how the food tasted. "If the food looks good," explained Sergeant Major Paul Cyr with the Department of the Army, "they'll enjoy the meal. They look forward to that. It's a morale booster." The soldier/cooks take their jobs seriously. Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 1:59 a.m. and found the kitchen fully engulfed in flames. Officials said it took 15 minutes to bring the fire under control and 30 minutes to extinguish it. Smoke and heat damage was found throughout the residence, officials said, who added that smoke detectors were in working order. The fire started when an occupant of the house placed a pan of oil on the stove, then fell asleep, officials said. .

Kitchen-Cabinets-Design.com Announces e-Book Recall

/24-7PressRelease/ - VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, November 02, 2006 - Recent changes in the housing and remodeling industries have forced Kitchen-Cabinets-Design.com to announce a recall on all of its popular series of e-Books it publishes. The decision was made by KCD President, Damion Rutherford, on Tuesday. "These recent changes affect the information we give to our customers. It's just not as accurate as it once was, and we have to do something about that", Rutherford said. Rutherford also added that "...the e-Books will still contain great information for our customers. The useful tools to help through the remodeling process, tips on hiring a contractor, and local company reviews will still be there. The biggest change will be in the how, what, and why of our remodeling recommendations. This is the information that was affected by market changes.

Design contest aims to give kitchen standby Tupperware a hip new ...

NEW YORK (AP) - Tupperware has many purposes: forming Jell-O rings, spin-drying salads, storing spaghetti, microwaving oatmeal. But Tupperware as an evening bag? It may look a bit like a sandwich box, but the lace-patterned accessory is among the winners of a contest that challenged Tupperware sellers and users to get creative with the iconic plastic containers. The winners, announced Wednesday, include a kaleidoscope, a model race car and an intricate illuminated sculpture. Their creators range from an Indian graphic artist to a French Tupperware saleswoman. Tupperware, which turned 60 this year, is a fixture in kitchens and American popular culture. Its signature sales parties are often invoked as shorthand for 1950s suburbia, though they are still held in droves around the world.

CFIA: Health Hazard Alert-Thrifty Kitchen Crab Cakes May Contain ...

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Thrifty Foods are warning the public not to consume Thrifty Kitchen Crab Cakes described below because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. "We like cooking all cuisines, but we have a special love for French food - our mother has always loved France," Diana says. Each weekend the family gathers at one of the sisters' homes for a long lunch and the pair also host joint dinner parties. The sisters work together on the salads, while Catherine focuses on savoury dishes and Diana makes desserts and quiches. "I am the pastry queen," says Diana of her signature walnut tart. As it can be installed at waist height or lower, it is perfect for under-the-counter installations, in islands and open-plan kitchens. The donation was announced yesterday by the California Restaurant Association's San Diego County chapter. The organization also plans to start a mentorship program in local restaurants for students interested in pursuing careers in food service. Among the items received by the schools were new culinary textbooks, ranges, food processors, waffle makers and cutlery. The equipment will benefit nearly 400 culinary-arts students in the San Diego Unified School District's Regional Occupation Program. .

Kitchen design with the cook in mind

Most people shudder at the thought of the harvest gold appliances and avocado green shag carpet that characterized the homes of the 1970s, but restaurateur David Gingrass, who owns the acclaimed Hawthorne Lane in San Francisco, fell in love with a 1975 Napa ranch-style home. He completed much of the renovation work himself, eventually turning it into a comfortable home where he could entertain, despite its having only 1,500 square feet. His kitchen, of course, was of primary importance to him, and several of his ideas would work in any small home. One is the continuous upper cabinet line that doesnt waver when it passes over the sink. Another is the clever placement of a clear glass panel between the countertop and the upper cabinets. This provides extra storage and increased natural light that can balance out the darkness of espresso cabinets.

Secrets of Miss Cleo's kitchen revealed in new book

The 208-page book featuring more than 100 recipes represents a joint effort by Caymanian companies Cayman Net Ltd and Island Fever Press Ltd. Tuesday, a $500,000 campaign was launched to help ensure the doors will stay open. Volunteers were preparing the day's meal Tuesday as they have done for the almost 650,000 meals served to the hungry over the last quarter century. The organization has been run by various service groups, volunteers and church groups. Since the building is almost 125-years-old, it needs some renovations and reconstruction to meet current standards. Fundraising chair Jack Mallon says committee members are reaching out to the public for a helping hand to keep the soup kitchen open. ''This has been going on for years, we're just now - they've just now come to people like myself and said, could you help us because we've been doing this on our own for over 25 years, it's getting tougher, could you come and help us.'' Mallon says the campaign is to help with construction, operation and sustainability of the facility.

Soup Kitchen Serves Best Chili

The smell of chili peppers emanating from the Roberta Bondar Pavilion attracted thousands of hungry people yesterday for the 6th Annual ChiliFest. The event, a fund raiser for the Sault Area Hospital, is one of the most popular of the year. Fifteen restaurants served up their best chili for the hungry crowd, with the final say going to the judges. The judges choice for best and hottest chili went to the Community Soup Kitchen. By submitting their vote to the Peoples Choice Award box, everyone who attended the ChiliFest was able to be a judge. After all, everyone has their own opinion on what makes a good chili. The people chose Paesano Foods . We tried our very best to uncover the secret ingredients used by some of the chili creators, but no one was willing to share what made theirs special.

The leading magazine for the kitchen and bath design industry.

For the past several months we have been hearing the term upselling. While this seems to be a new thing for the selling field, its not really new at all. And its something that should be brought to the table for some serious discussion. When I purchase a new suit, a good salesperson will always bring out a shirt, tie, belt anything that might go with that suit. This concept makes sense for all industries selling to clients. When I started in the kitchen and bath industry, the goal was to sell a client a new kitchen or bath remodeling project. A kitchen project consisted of cabinets, countertops, a floor and appliances, as well as wet-water appliances such as a sink, faucet and garbage disposal. But today things have changed. While theres much more that can be included in a remodel, many firms are leaving a lot of money and profits on the table.

Don't let design goofs ruin kitchen remodel

A nyone thinking of remodeling a kitchen might want to check out the August issue of Consumer Reports, in which the no-ads, no-fluff magazine ranks appliances, flooring and countertops based on its independent testing. Even more helpful might be the accompanying feature, "The Five Worst Kitchen Design Goofs" -- choices that stand in the way of an efficient kitchen. They are: An island that's too big. Anything larger than 4 feet deep or 10 feet long is hard to use or clean. Not enough cabinets, and they're in the wrong place. Also, pull-out shelves, built-in dividers and Lazy Susans should be used more often to capture wasted space. Insufficient ventilation over the range or cooktop. Good ventilation improves air quality and helps reduce heat and odors inside the house.
