If the Isle of Anglesey, where I live, has particular merit for a gardener, it is that we are warmed by the Gulf Stream, giving us mild weather conducive to growing early vegetables. The drawback, however, is that the winds off the Irish Sea are usually considerable. In the back end of 2006 and for most of January, the weather has been pretty extreme. Only in the past few days have I been able to get on to the soil and do a little digging: until now, gale-force winds combined with incessant rain have been a major problem. In the night, the sound of breaking glass and flapping polythene torn from one of my polytunnels has woken me with a jolt. Whenever we have strong winds here, it is almost impossible to get a good night's sleep. .
